Estate Overview
Set among vineyards and olive groves in the hills surrounding Montespertoli, the properties of Antica Fattoria di Paterno, Tenuta i Massini, Massini Village, and Barondoli form a small collection of historic Tuscan estates connected by quiet countryside roads, olive trees, and vineyards. Each offers a slightly different atmosphere, from hilltop villas and historic towers to peaceful vineyard hamlets, while remaining closely linked to one another across the landscape.
Together they create a shared setting where guests can experience the beauty of the Tuscan countryside while staying just minutes from the heart of the celebration.
History of the Florentine Hills
The rolling hills surrounding Montespertoli and the Chianti countryside southwest of Florence have been shaped by more than a thousand years of Tuscan history. Long before modern Tuscany existed, this landscape formed part of the agricultural heartland of the Republic of Florence, supplying wine, olive oil, and grain to the powerful city-state that would later give rise to the Renaissance.
At the center of this landscape stands Antica Fattoria di Paterno, a hilltop estate surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and woodland. The property is distinguished by its historic tower, whose origins date back to the 10th century, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in the region and a reminder of Tuscany's early medieval past.
During the late medieval and Renaissance periods, estates across these hills were controlled by powerful Florentine families whose influence was deeply intertwined with the politics of Florence itself. Historical records indicate that Antica Fattoria di Paterno was owned by the Pitti family during the 14th and 15th centuries, prominent bankers and political figures whose rivalry, and eventual alliance, with the ruling Medici dynasty helped shape the history of Florence. In later periods the estate also passed through the hands of the Machiavelli family, whose lands extended throughout the Florentine countryside during the Renaissance.
Towers like the one at Paterno were once a defining feature of medieval Tuscany. Built both as defensive lookout points and symbols of prestige, they allowed landowners to oversee their estates and surrounding valleys while offering refuge during periods of conflict between rival city-states and noble families.
Over the centuries the surrounding countryside evolved into a network of farms and rural villages, including Tenuta i Massini, Massini Village, and Barondoli, where vineyards and olive groves have been cultivated for generations. The vineyards surrounding Montespertoli lie within one of the world's earliest officially defined wine regions, established in 1716 by Grand Duke Cosimo III de’ Medici, when Tuscany became one of the first places in history to formally regulate and protect its wine production.
Today these estates remain connected through the Picchi family, whose members care for the properties across generations, one branch stewarding Antica Fattoria di Paterno, and others overseeing Tenuta i Massini, Massini Village, and Barondoli, preserving both the historic architecture and the agricultural traditions of the Florentine hills.
Few places capture the spirit of Tuscany quite like these hills, where medieval towers, Renaissance history, and the timeless rhythm of vineyard life come together in one of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy.
